A plain-English breakdown β no jargon, no hype β so you can pick the right AI tool for you.
Both are excellent. ChatGPT is the most well-known and has a huge range of add-ons. Claude is friendlier to talk to, better at long documents, and writes in a more natural human tone β which makes it a brilliant starting point for beginners. If you want to feel like you're talking to a patient, thoughtful friend rather than a search engine, Claude wins.

This is where Claude really shines. When you ask Claude to write something β an email, a social post, a summary β it produces text that sounds like a thoughtful human wrote it. ChatGPT is also excellent, but its writing can sometimes feel a little robotic or over-structured (lots of bullet points and bold headings where you just wanted a normal sentence).
Claude's interface is simple and uncluttered. You type, it responds. There are fewer menus, modes, and options to get confused by. ChatGPT has added a lot of features over the years (plugins, custom GPTs, DALLΒ·E, voice mode) which is great if you want them β but can feel overwhelming when you're just starting out.
Need to paste in a long report and ask questions about it? Claude handles this better. It can read and work with much larger amounts of text at once β so if you want to summarise a 50-page document or analyse a long email thread, Claude is the stronger choice.
ChatGPT has DALLΒ·E 3 built in β you can ask it to generate images directly in the chat. Claude does not have built-in image generation (you would need a separate tool like Midjourney or Adobe Firefly). ChatGPT also has a larger ecosystem of third-party plugins and "Custom GPTs" that people have built.
Both offer free plans with some limitations. Both paid plans cost around Β£18βΒ£20 per month. Claude's paid plan (Claude Pro) gives you significantly more usage of their most powerful model. There's no meaningful difference in price β it comes down to what you'll actually use it for.
